Hevoskirjoja lukevat lapset (ja heidän vanhempansa)

Lapsena minä ja siskoni olimme hullaantuneita perinteisiin hevoskirjoihin, kuten Tuulen kuningas, Uljas musta, Musta ori, My Little Pony ja Misty of Chincoteague. Kun aloin kirjoittaa #Hevostyttö-kirjaa, pohdin paljon näitä klassikoita. Miksi sukupolvi toisensa jälkeen kaikkialla maailmassa rakastaa juuri näitä hevoskirjoja?

Tovin mietittyäni keksin siihen kaksi syytä.

Ensinnäkin hevoset ovat majesteettisia olentoja, jotka symboloivat lapsuuden viattomuutta ja lempeyttä mutta samalla myös aikuisuuden voimaa ja vapautta. Kun antautuu rakastamaan hevosia, saa nelistää kahden maailman välissä. Eikö olekin silkkaa taikaa?

Toiseksi suurimmassa osassa hevosklassikkoja lapsi tai nuori onnistuu pelastamaan, kesyttämään tai parantamaan hevosen, ja hän tekee sen lempeästi ja suurella sydämellä eikä julmasti tai raakaa voimaa käyttäen. Siinä vasta huikea oppitunti johtamisesta! Hevoskirjat opettavat, ettei välttämättä tarvitse olla suurin tai kovin menestyäkseen, sillä fiksuin, viisain tai myötätuntoisin pärjää hyvin. Siitä syystä hevostarinat kiinnostavat yhä uusia lukijoita ja yhdistävät sukupolvia ja kulttuureita.

Perinteiset hevostarinat inspiroivat minua kirjoittaessani #Hevostyttö-kirjaa. Halusin kirjaan nokkelaa huumoria ja lukuisia noloja tilanteita tasapainottamaan vakavuutta. Olen ylpeä siitä, että kirjoitin hauskan kirjan tytöille. Minusta huumori ja etenkin kyky nauraa itselleen voimaannuttaa kaikenikäisiä naisia.

Tarinassa on lukuisia nykypäivän #hevostyttöjen ongelmia, mukaan lukien snobit tyypit, jotka omaa hevosta vailla oleva päähenkilö Wills kohtaa tallilla, kun hänen vanhempansa vihdoin suostuvat ratsastustunteihin. Kirja on kunnianosoitus kaikille ajattomille, hevostytöistä kertoville teoksille. Toivon sen raikkaan kerronnan saavan vastakaikua niin lapsilta, teineiltä kuin kaikenikäisiltä hevosten ystäviltä!

Kirja kertoo ystävyydestä, sisaruudesta ja hevosista sekä niihin liittyvistä epäonnen ja suuren onnen hetkistä.

Kirjan tärkein anti on, että jos tunnet itsesi noloksi tai ulkopuoliseksi tai olet vähän hukassa, voit luottaa siihen, että löydät takuulla vielä oman paikkasi. Siellä sinua ja sisäistä #hevostyttösi arvostetaan. Kuvailen kirjassa tätä niin, että jokainen löytää ”oman laumansa.” Toivottavasti nuoret lukijat etsivät, kunnes löytävät oman laumansa. Ja jos sitä ei löydy, toivottavasti he perustavat itse sellaisen!

Why horse books remain so popular with kids

Growing up, my sister and I were absolutely obsessed with all the classic horse books: Misty of Chincoteague, King of the Wind, Black Beauty, Black Stallion, My Little Pony. So naturally, when I sat down to write my HORSE GIRL novel for tweens, I thought back on those iconic books. Why are they so beloved by generation of readers around the globe?

After some soul searching, I came up with two answers.

First of all, horses are majestic creatures that symbolize the pure-hearted, tender comforts of childhood — but also the power and freedoms of adulthood. When you fall in love with horses, you get to gallop back and forth between both worlds. How magical is that??

Secondly, most classic horse stories feature a young person who’s somehow able to save or tame or heal a horse — but she does it using gentle savvy and a giant heart rather than cruelty or brute strength. What a powerful lesson in leadership! Horse books teach us that we don’t necessarily have to be the biggest or the toughest to succeed — we can be the smartest or the cleverest or the most empathetic. I think that’s why horse tales endure — and why they often act as a heartbeat connecting generations and cultures.

My book, HORSE GIRL, was of course inspired by those classic stories. But I wanted to add an irreverent sense of humor and plenty of awkward, angsty moments to balance out the earnestness. I’m proud to have written a funny book for girls. I think humor, especially the self-depricating kind, can be such a powerful tool for women of all ages.

The story is told in a modern voice with plenty of modern #horsegirl problems — including the snobby kids Wills encounters at the stable when her parents finally allow her to enroll in riding lessons and she can’t afford her own horse. The book is definitely an homage to those timeless tomes in the Horse Girl canon. But I hope its fresh approach will resonate with tweens, teens and horse lovers of all ages!

The book is ultimately a story about friendship and sisters and horses — and all of the perils and unbridled joy that come with each.

The most important lesson in the book is that if you’re feeling awkward or lost or like you’ll never fit in, trust that someday you will find that magical place where you do. Where everyone will embrace you and your inner #horsegirl. In the book, I describe the feeling as finding your “forever herd.” I hope young readers will keep searching until they find their own forever herd. And if they don’t find it, I hope they’ll create it for themselves!
